Instructions Following Endodontic Microsurgery
Do not lift or pull lips to examine the surgical l area because repeated irritations may tear tissue and delay healing
Do not rinse your mouth for 12 hours following surgery. Rinsing disturbs the surgical area and delays healing.
Do not exercise for 24 hours following surgery. It may cause bleeding and swelling.
Do not smoke for 24 hours following surgery.
Slight swelling and skin discoloration is normal. In order to minimize swelling; apply an ice pack over the surgical area with gentle pressure for 20 minutes, rest 10 minutes and repeat for 1 to 2 hours.
A small amount of bleeding is normal for 24 hours.
Mild discomfort is normal. If you have been given a prescription, take as directed. Please avoid aspirin or medications containing aspirin.
Adequate food and fluid intake is very important. Soft cold foods are best, such as ice cream, gelatin, pudding, and yogurt. Crusty, hard, and hot foods should be avoided for 24 hours. If eating is difficult, meal replacement drinks such as, Instant Breakfast work well.
After 12 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water (1/2 tsp. Salt in 8 oz. Water) after each meal and at bedtime. Continue this until the sutures are removed and the area is checked. Avoid mouth rinses with alcohol (i.e. Listerine and Scope).
Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night following surgery.
Toothbrushing should be done carefully with a soft toothbrush. The surgical area does not need to be brushed until after the sutures have been removed. Do not floss the surgical area.
Immediately report to our office any unusual symptoms such as excessive bleeding, swelling, or fever.
A follow-up appointment has been schedule to remove the sutures and check the healing. If you have any questions, please call us anytime at (801) 278-3636

Instructions Following Completion of Your Microsurgical Endodontic Therapy (After Suture Removal)
Surgical endodontic therapy has now been completed. It is normal for surgically treated teeth to be tender to biting and chewing while healing. This will resolve as the supporting tissues of the tooth heal and return to normal. The amount of time for complete healing is different for each individual, but can take as long as 6 months. Brushing , flossing, and chewing can be started carefully. Healing tissues may be damaged by agressive brushing and flossing. If cleaning produces pain or bleeding, stop and rinse with warm salt water (3 to 4 times a day) and wait several days longer to begin cleaning in the area.
Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil) 200 to 800 mg (1 to 4 tablets) every 6 hours, naproxen (Aleve 220mg) 1 to 2 tablets every 12 hours or acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1 to 2 500mg tablets every 6 hours may alleviate discomfort. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above medications, or should swelling develop, please contact the office immediately (801-278-3636). Please have your pharmacy telephone number ready.
If you have any questions or are not sure if the symptoms you are experiencing are normal, please call.
The vast majority of endodontic therapy is successful, occasionally problems do develop and the tooth needs to be carefully monitored during healing. Included in your treatment is a follow-up examination to evaluate the progress of healing. This appointment will require only a few minutes and no additional fee will be charged for this re-evaluation.
Please call our office in 6 months to schedule your re-evaluation appointment.
Thank you for letting us serve your endodontic needs. If you have any questions or problems, you are always welcome to call us.
