Instructions Following Completion of Your Endodontic Therapy
Endodontic treatment has now been completed on your tooth. The root canal system is now permanently sealed; however, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. Your dentist must place a permanent restoration to protect the tooth from fracture and decay. Please call you dentist for an appointment immediately. If the tooth is left unprotected, it may fracture or become necessary to retreat the root canal.
A complete report of your treatment will be sent to your dentist.
It is normal for endodontically treated teeth and surrounding gum tissue to be tender especially to biting. This is normal and will resolve as the supporting tissues of the tooth heal and return to normal. The amount of time necessary for complete healing is different for each individual, but may take as long as 6 months. Taking ibuprofen (Advil) 200 to 800 mg (1 to 4 tablets) every 6 hours, naproxen (Aleve 220mg) 1 to 2 tablets every 12 hours or acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1 to 2 500mg tablets every 6 hours may alleviate discomfort. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above medications, or should swelling develop, please contact the office immediately (801-278-3636). Please have your pharmacy telephone number ready.
If you have any questions, or you are unsure if the symptoms you are experiencing are normal, please call the office.
The vast majority of endodontic therapy is successful, occasionally problems do develop and the tooth needs to be carefully monitored during healing. Included in your treatment is a follow-up examination to evaluate the progress of healing. This appointment will require only a few minutes and no additional fee will be charged for this re-evaluation.
Please call our office in 6 months after the completion of your endodontic therapy to schedule your re-evaluation appointment.
Thank you for letting us serve your endodontic needs. If you have any questions or problems, you are always welcome to call us.
